45 year old woman with hyperthyroidism and atrial fibrillation was found to have haematuria.
The renal parenchyma shows pale, wedge-shaped, necrotic subcapsular areas with hyperaemic borders. Note base of wedge abuts renal capsule. No obvious scarring is seen on the subcapsular cortical surface. The kidney size and shape and the pelvicalyceal system are intact.
Note: The reason for the infarct is likely from thromboembolism. Can you work out why?
