55 year old woman recalled suffering from episodes of renal colic associated with intermittent haematuria several years ago. Imaging revealed unilateral renal enlargement with a proximal ureteric stone.
The kidney is enlarged. Cut surface shows marked dilatation of the calyces and renal pelvis (hydronephrosis) with severe thinning of the renal parenchyma so much so that the renal capsule appears translucent. The kidney is essentially a bag filled with urine.
A blackish calculus is impacted within the proximal ureter.
