35 year old farmer had a recent appendicectomy. He was re-admitted for fever and right upper quadrant pain but no jaundice.
Cut surface of the right lobe of the non-cirrhotic liver shows a large, localized nodular area with a pale, spongy honeycomb of confluent small abscesses (usually filled with greenish pus). The intrahepatic bile ducts are intact. No tumour or calculus is seen.
