76 year man with hypertension, diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Abdominal palpation revealed a pulsatile midline mass.
The aorta and its major branches show fusiform dilatation with thinning of the arterial wall. The intimal surface shows extensive atheromatous plaques with some overlying brownish thrombus material. These thrombi may embolise to distal sites, eg. vessels supplying the lower extremities, and cause tissue infarction.
